Former world number one Naomi Osaka has stated that she no longer works with coach Wim Fissette. Osaka has voiced dissatisfaction with her recent performances following a second-round exit at the US Open just over two weeks ago. She is now rated number 75.
Osaka, 26, won two of her four Grand Slam titles while working under the Belgian coach. These were the 2020 US Open and 2021 Australian Open. This is the second time Osaka and Fissette have parted ways. Also read: Carlos Alcaraz, 3 more to play in Charlotte tennis exhibition
In an Instagram story late Friday, the Japanese player wrote: “4 years, 2 Slams, and a whole lot of memories. Thank you, Wim, for being a fantastic instructor and even better guy. Best wishes.”
Fissette began working with Osaka just before the start of the 2020 season. They separated up in summer 2022 before reuniting last year when Osaka returned to training after maternity leave.
“In 15 years on tour, this was one of my best years working together with amazing people,” Fissette wrote in an Instagram post Saturday. “After every defeat, we worked harder, better, and grew significantly. We were so close to a breakthrough.”
Following the US Open, Osaka “decided to move forward with a new path,” he explained. “I accepted it knowing we close this second run with more good memories and gratitude for building her way back.” Also read: Naomi Osaka ousts No. 9 seed Ons Jabeutr in National Bank Open
Karolina Muchova defeated Osaka 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the second round at Flushing Meadows. Afterward, she stated, “It’s a little tough, since I take these losses very personally. It’s a dramatic statement, but when I lose, I feel like my heart dies.”
Fissette has previously worked with players including Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, and Angelique Kerber.
