Carlos Alcaraz leads Team Europe to Laver Cup victory

Carlos Alcaraz, the four-time Grand Slam champion, defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 as Team Europe overcame Team World 13-11 to win the Laver Cup on Sunday. In the eleventh game, Alcaraz broke Fritz, the runner-up at the US Open, and sealed the championship on serve, setting up celebrations among the European team led by captain Björn Borg.

Leading 8–4 in points going into the last day of competition, Team World was the clear favourite to win the Laver Cup for the third time in a row. Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud defeated Americans Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe in the doubles 6-2, 7-6 (6) to start the European comeback on Sunday. However, Shelton defeated Daniil Medvedev, the Australian Open runner-up, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 10-7, to put the World team in first place. Also read: Davis Cup Final: Italy to face Argentina

Alcaraz and Fritz will face off in the final after Tiafoe, who advanced to the US Open semifinals, lost to Alexander Zverev, the winner of the French Open, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5.

The Laver Cup is structured similarly to the Ryder Cup in golf, with the winning team being the first to 13 points. There were four games on Sunday, and each was worth three points. Alcaraz, the winner of this year’s French Open and Wimbledon, recorded Europe’s lone victory in the four games played on Saturday. Also read: Who is Yoshihito Nishioka girlfriend, Saya Hiyama?
