In the China Open final on Sunday, Coco Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 to win her second championship of the season. Gauff, 20, who is ranked sixth, won the China Open at the youngest age in 14 years. In addition, she is the second American champion in Beijing, after Serena Williams in 2004 and 2013.
Coco Gauff won his eighth career championship. She became the first player in the Open era to have an 8-1 record in tour finals and a 7-0 record in hard-court finals. Also read: Jannik Sinner ‘very confident’ in positive outcome after WADA appeals his doping case
“Congratulations, Karolina! It’s wonderful to see you back on tour,” Gauff said to Muchova, who was out for a considerable amount of time following a wrist injury sustained at the 2023 US Open. “I think you’re such an amazing player, and you deserve everything, and hopefully you play many more finals.”
This was Gauff’s first competition since her break with Brad Gilbert last month, when she added Matt Daly to her coaching staff. “I’m grateful to my team. We’re playing in our first tournament as a fully formed squad,” Gauff remarked. “Thank you, Matt, this is our first tournament together, and obviously, it’s going well, so thank you for helping me throughout this week.” Also read: Billie Jean King: first female athlete to be awarded Congressional Gold Medal
