Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud reach ATP semis

At the ATP Finals on Friday, Carlos Alcaraz was the major name that was absent as the final two semifinal slots were filled. The French Open and Wimbledon winner, who has been ill this week, lost to Alexander Zverev 7-6 (5), 6-4, and was therefore eliminated from the prestigious eight-man competition.

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner will take on Casper Ruud in the semifinals on Saturday, while Zverev will face Taylor Fritz. “My goal [is] to be at the end [of tournaments] all the time,” Alcaraz stated. “I’ll at least make it to the semifinals and finals of every tournament I participate in. I must thus go to work. I want to improve as a player and [be] more reliable in 2025. By defeating Andrey Rublev, Ruud made progress. 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Zverev finished his round-robin group with a perfect three wins. Alcaraz had one victory, Rublev had none, and Ruud had two.

When he was unable to fully reach a Zverev passing effort and ended up sprawled on the court, Alcaraz lost a vital point despite turning on the style in the final game. “He changes into someone else. At the most crucial times, he truly gives it his all,” Zverev remarked. “The last game was the most entertaining game of the match.” Fritz lost against Sinner in the opposite group.
