Billie Jean King, a tennis legend and an iconic figure in the world of sports, continues to be a tireless advocate for women’s sports even as she approaches her 80s. At her annual awards ceremony for the Women’s Sports Foundation in New York on Thursday, King will commemorate the 50th anniversary of equal prize money at the US Open and the King-Riggs match with roughly 60 athletes. To celebrate the pay equity milestone in August, former President Barack Obama and first wife Michelle Obama went to the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

King, a 39-time Grand Slam champion, has established the production firm “Pressure is a Privilege,” which is named after the slogan.

She is also the executive producer and anchor of the PBS program “Groundbreakers,” which explores female athletics. Members of Congress are working to grant King the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the top awards awarded to Americans whose accomplishments have a significant influence on their area.
