In Melbourne, following an exciting two weeks of tennis at the Australian Open, there are just two men remaining. Both have played some really good tennis thus far, though they have occasionally had to dig deep. Without a doubt, both will be frantic to claim the crown. Jannik Sinner could be the genuine top player in the men’s game right now. The 22-year-old Italian has defeated Novak Djokovic three times in the last three months and three of the last four. Sinner defeated Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open. On Sunday, who will lift the renowned Norman Brookes Challenge Cup—Jannik Sinner or Daniil Medvedev?
Daniil Medvedev vs. Jannik Sinner Prediction
Sinner is a big favourite on Sunday since he has been the most popular player on tour since last autumn. The 22-year-old’s semifinal win over Djokovic on Friday was his third in three months (he previously defeated the world number one twice last autumn). However, this is Sinner’s first Grand Slam final appearance. You never know how an up-and-comer, particularly one as talented as Sinner, will handle such a situation.
Medvedev, on the other hand, has previously won a major (2021 U.S. Open), and this is his sixth slam final, including his third at the Australian Open. The Russian has not just more experience, but also a head-to-head advantage. He has won six of his previous nine encounters with Sinner. Sinner has mainly destroyed opponents this fortnight, but he was a great favourite in his first five bouts. Djokovic was admittedly terrible in the semifinals. Medvedev, as seen by his overall resume and head-to-head experience with Sinner, is a formidable opponent. Five of their last seven matches have required deciding sets, including two out of three this autumn. The only recent match that did not go to a decisive set was Sinner’s incredibly competitive 7-6(2), 7-6(2) victory.
Medvedev has previously played three five-setters at this event. It wouldn’t be surprising if he had to play another.
2024 Australian Open Bracket & Schedule
The Australian Open men’s singles final between Medvedev and Sinner begins at 7:30 p.m. local time (3:30 a.m. ET) and will be broadcast on ESPN. Sinner has advanced through the bracket in dominant form. The Italian dropped only one set in total, to Djokovic in the semifinals. Before that, he defeated Botic van de Zandschulp, Jesper de Jong, Sebastian Baez, Karen Khachanov, and Andrey Rublev. Medvedev had a far more difficult time passing Terence Atmane, Emil Ruusuvuori, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Nuno Borges, Hubert Hurkacz, and Alexander Zverev. The Russian’s matches against Ruusuvori, Hurkacz, and Zverev all lasted five sets. Also read: Australian Open 2024: Daniil Medvedev takes out Hubert Hurkacz
