Croatia’s Donna Vekic and Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska advanced to the second round of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Tuesday. Vekic, a finalist here in 2022, defeated local wildcard Katherine Hui 7-5, 6-2 in her WTA Tour singles debut. Hui, a Santa Fe Christian School alumnus who now plays collegiately at Stanford, is the reigning US Open girls’ singles champion.
Yastremska, who reached her first major semifinal at the Australian Open last month, had to dig deep to beat American Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. The 23-year-old was up a set and a break until her opponent forced a deciding. Yastremska overcame nine double faults during the two-hour, eight-minute set. Tatjana Maria, 36, advanced after eighth seed Leylah Fernandez retired due to a left shoulder injury in the second set, trailing 0-4. It is the third straight year that the 21-year-old Canadian, who was a US Open finalist in 2021, has failed to get to the second round in San Diego.
Czech Katerina Siniakova, who won the doubles title here last year with countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova, defeated Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-3, 6-1, in one hour and 13 minutes.
