Due to a back ailment that required her to retire from the China Open last week, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Japan Open. The tournament’s organizers announced on Monday.
The 26-year-old struggled with a lower back issue against eventual champion Coco Gauff and was pulled off the court in the second set of her last-16 encounter at the China Open in Beijing. “Due to injury, Naomi Osaka has decided to withdraw from the tournament,” the Japan Tennis Association stated in a statement. Osaka is expected to feature in the Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament 2024. Which will take place in Tokyo from October 21–27.
Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, participated in her final WTA event on home soil in 2022 at the Pan Pacific. However she withdrew before her second-round match because of stomach issues.
