Novak Djokovic to play Brisbane International before Australia Open

Novak Djokovic announced on Wednesday that he will play in the Brisbane International warm-up competition as the first step in his preparations for the Australian Open next month.

At the ATP 250 event, which begins on Dec. 29, Djokovic, who is vying for his 11th Australian Open championship and 25th Grand Slam, will face defending Brisbane champion Grigor Dimitrov.

Other participants include Frances Tiafoe and Holger Rune. The 37-year-old Novak Djokovic said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to be starting my Australian swing at the Brisbane International and to compete again at Pat Rafter Arena.” Also read: Tomas Machac tops Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai Quarterfinals

When the first major of the year starts on January 12, Djokovic will be aiming for a record-extending 11th Australian Open title under the tutelage of Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion and twice Wimbledon winner.

“I am quite thrilled about it. Everyone, including myself, is surprised by this partnership,” Djokovic continued. However, it’s thrilling for tennis. He has been one of my fiercest opponents. Our ages are identical. We have performed at every stadium in our sport. I am therefore eager to play and get ready for the upcoming season.” Also read: Billie Jean King: first female athlete to be awarded Congressional Gold Medal
