Following successful documentaries on Ayrton Senna, Amy Winehouse, and Diego Maradona, filmmaker Asif Kapadia will cover the final days of Roger Federer tennis career in a new non-fiction film. Federer retired from playing tennis in 2022, after winning 20 major Grand Slam singles titles during his storied and renowned career.
Amazon Prime Video has approved the documentary, which was originally meant as a home movie. Variety stated that it will include interviews with Federer’s rivals and contemporaries, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. According to Variety, the clip, which was originally a home movie never intended for public consumption, reveals Federer at his most emotional and transparent self, as he says farewell to a game and the fans who have defined his life for the last two decades.
The project is characterized as “an intimate follow-along through the final 12 days of Roger Federer legendary career.”
“Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career. So that I could have it later on to show my family and friends,” Federer said in a statement. “at my career, I preferred to avoid having cameras around me and my family, especially at key events. But I didn’t see the harm in filming this because it was never meant for the public. However, we filmed so many powerful moments that it evolved into a highly personal journey. I am delighted to be collaborating with Prime Video. Due to their extensive worldwide reach and strong influence in the film business. This ensures that the story of my final days in tennis will appeal to both tennis fans and a wider audience globally.” Also read: Miami Open to include wheelchair tennis and pickleball
