Coco Gauff‘s remarkable tennis journey continues as she extended her winning streak to 15 matches and reached the quarterfinals of the China Open, marking the longest women’s winning streak of the year. Veronika Kudermetova, the 16th-seeded player, was defeated by Coco Gauff on Thursday in the third round of the China Open after saving four set points. The third-ranked American’s winning run now stands at 15, the longest on the WTA Tour this year and one that includes both her US Open triumph last month and the Cincinnati crown.
“I’m really happy with how I’ve been able to manage,” Gauff said. “I had trouble finding the way I wanted to play in these conditions. I felt like the balls were flying in the first match and playing passive in the second. I’m really happy with how I’ve been able to troubleshoot and problem-solve. Today I played a good match overall.” Also read: Reaching New Heights: Veronika Kudermetova Claims Second Title at Toray Pan Pacific Open
Gauff will play sixth-seeded Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.
Sakkari overcame local favourite Wang Xinyu 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. “I think she’s probably one of the most athletic players on tour, so I think it’s going to be tough,” Gauff said of Sakkari.
Sabalenka won the first set with 13 aces, but the 36th-ranked Italian player rallied from a set down to serve for the second set twice at 5-4 and 6-5 after falling down by a score of 3-1. With a 4-1 advantage against the Kazakh player, Sabalenka most memorably beat her in the Australian Open final before dropping their most recent meeting in the Indian Wells championship match. “It’s always great battles against Elena. I think I just have to focus on myself, play aggressive and just play my game,” Sabalenka said. “I know that I’ll have some chances to win this match. In the last match I lost, I got nervous a little bit and I rushed a little bit more. The key against Elena is just to stay calm, stay aggressive, and not overrush things.”
Gauff’s extraordinary run not only demonstrates her prowess on the court but also her ability to maintain consistent performance. With each victory, she solidifies her position as one of the rising stars in women’s tennis. Fans worldwide are eagerly following her journey as she competes at the highest level and seeks to claim more titles.
