Fernandez got off to a shaky start, as No. 85-ranked Siniakova won the first set with two breaks. Fernandez, ranked 60th, replied by extending her advantage to 4-0 in the second quarter before the Czech player had an off-court medical timeout and returned with her left upper leg wrapped. Siniakova seemed to benefit from the break as she fought her way back to 3-4, but Fernandez saved six break opportunities in a 10-deuce game to hold and then claimed the set in her next service game.
