Arjun Kadhe and Rithvik Choudary captured the ATP Challenger doubles title in Olbia, Italy, with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Serbia’s Ivan Sabanov and Matej Sabanov in the final of the hard-court men’s tennis event on Saturday.
The Indian pair had come through a tough challenge in the semifinal when they saved three match points to beat Roman Jebavy and Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic 2-6, 7-6 (9), 10-7. This accomplishment marks a significant achievement in their tennis careers and adds to their professional successes.
It is the sixth and largest Challenger award for Kadhe, who is rated 121 in the world. Rithvik, rated 186, is making his Challenger debut, though he has eight ITF championships to his name, all partnering compatriot Nikki Kaliyanda Poonacha. “It has been a really great week. Even last week (in Malaga, Spain), it was good. We lost a close one in the super tiebreak in the first round against the top seeds,” Kadhe said. Today was pretty straight forward. We started well, we served well and we stayed on top of them, didn’t give them a chance to come back.”
“Really happy overall because we have been playing well and the level is there. Just waiting for our chance to convert and I am glad we converted in a big 125 Challenger.” Also read: Tennis Court Dimensions, Size, Measurements and Diagram
Balachandran Manikath mentored the duo through the Doubles Dream of India course. Kadhe also expressed gratitude for the Punit Balan Group’s assistance. “It’s a huge mental relief for me to be able to focus and take chances (on the tennis court). It plays a role in matches,” he explained.
“It has been going pretty well so far and always helps if you get along well with someone. Rithvik is really hard working, I like that in our team. I feel we have a lot of room to improve as a team and as individuals. The goals for us are pretty straight forward — you work hard and give your best. That is all you can do. We are on the same page with that.”
The duo’s success in the ATP Challenger tournament showcases their skill and determination on the court. This victory not only brings recognition to their names but also contributes to their professional growth in the world of tennis. Such achievements highlight the talent and potential of these athletes as they continue to make their mark in the competitive tennis circuit.
